Essay 2: On The Struggle for Social and Environmental Change (150 points) Instructions This assignment is designed to help writers practice and learn to integrate reading and writing and use additional critical thinking resources. By including a strong thesis with unified supporting paragraphs of comparative points, information, and explanations, building on skills from Essay 1, writers can develop a well-organized written argumentative essay. Booth “The Good Argument.” · Martin Luther King Jr “Three Ways to Meet Oppression” Reading: Reading to Construct a Text The two authors, Davis and Thunberg, have urgent arguments on behalf of doing the right thing to change human behavior in regard to problems of climate change and systemic racism. As you read and annotate, collect and analyze examples of the problems they present so that you can identify and classify specific arguments meant to explore solutions— pinpointing elements of arguments that define, resolve, and correlate with needs and values of justice and change (or not). Using the Critical Thinking Resources above, create a worksheet and notes to classify, compare and contrast examples of reasoning from both authors. The annotations and classifications relating to the authors’ arguments could be quite extensive, so I suggest reading the authors separately and collecting the information so you can figure out intersecting patterns of reasoning: i.e., Davis does this, Thunberg does that. Consequently, writers should be able to summarize and discuss how the authors inform us on the conflicts, situations and evidence to argue on how to arrive at a pattern of reasoning that reflects a single complex solution on how to think about a unifying change to solve both problems. Writing: Writing is a Thinking Tool Use your written annotations and conclusions to compose a three to five-page essay that argues, analyzes and evaluates to conclude and support a thesis on how Davis and Thunberg present problems, information, and a pattern of reasoning that reflects a solution of better thinking than does currently exist. In other words, mediate a better way to think about solving the two problems. For example, Davis exposes and explicates ten diverging problematic social and racial issues of communities—local and global—including struggles against stereotyping, greed, prison systems, police, violence, and systemic racism. Write out several solutions she argues for. Does she use more than one solution for several problems? Are there several problems with one solution? Second, expose and compare several of Thunberg’s arguments also for one or more solutions by applying the Critical Thinking Resources to analyze, compare, and evaluate how both authors define their solutions. Third, make a judgment (an argumentative thesis) on the thinking that both authors use that emphasizes at least one solution. In the middle part of the essay, support your thesis, to convince an audience that the solutions meet the needs and values (or not), in spite of difficulties and oppressive environments. Finally, apply the concept of a guiding purpose to your own composing, reading, and thinking. Conclude the Thesis from Evidence and Reasons: Identify and explore significant clues based on evidence from critical similarities and differences between the authors’ arguments and experience; as well, compare and contrast the authors’ solution-finding methodologies to decide how the authors expect the problems to get solved. Conclude the thesis from reasons and evidence and write it in a complex, two-part (or more) declarative sentence so that you can defend it sufficiently in the middle paragraphs. Actually use the reasons and evidence from which you concluded the thesis to support the thesis. Use Critical Thinking and Argumentation to Analyze and Organize: After stating the thesis, apply Booth and Paul’s models to evaluate the ways that Davis and Thunberg argue for social change. The responses should be “better” and “worse”: Include direct examples of critical reasoning and values (from Paul and Booth) so that a reader can interpret and organize Davis’ ideas in logical “point-by-point” paragraphs. A point-by-point organization of evidence should make an intelligent “back and forth” dialogs in the paragraphs, including times, places, individuals, motivations, and effectiveness with which a reader can make a reasonable judgment. A simple way to organize is to list and paraphrase major claims and quotes from the texts, on an organizing chart or list. Then, identify the information from arguments and narration as being not just similar and different but better and worse than others, as connected to the claims, reasons, evidence, and examples. Basic Inquiry: Use questions to develop and conclude an evaluative argumentative thesis, using major ideas, evidence and explanations from the two authors: Using the terms of Booth’s five parts of an argument, summarize the main arguments of Davis and Thunberg. Paraphrase what you believe are the purposes of Davis and Thunberg. Which of Booth’s five parts of an argument appear most frequently and significantly? Is R. Paul’s theory an effective and efficient standard to assess examples of rationality and resistance to oppression as presented and integrated by the authors? To what extent does one of the two authors’ arguments seem more important than other? Essays should: Be three to five pages typewritten pages consisting of 5 to 7 body (PIES) paragraphs. Begin with a brief introduction to the authors and/or sufficient personal knowledge background information on the issues. Introduce a thesis of your own so that you can defend it with reasons and evidence in the middle paragraphs and apply MLA format.
