N‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ote: these readings are all short. Today, we turn away from questions of racial oppression to those based on gender and gender orientation. Since, from the beginning of the course, we have counter-posed historic oppression against historic claims of rights and equality, we must start from the fact that the great American doctrine of inclusion read, “all men are created equal.” 1. Seneca Falls and Redstockings are analyses by freedom fighters from wholly different eras about what is wrong and what needs to change. What ideas do they share in common? How are they different? What is each one’s view of men? What do you agree, and disagree, with in t‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍heir analyses? 2. Mainardi, Grose, Taub, Falwell and Canaday are about different variants of oppression. For each, identify the specific problem in a sentence, or two at most. Then, assess in what ways they seem like variations on the themes of otherness and exclusion that we have been discussing all course. Are any of them about something else – in other words, is gender or sexual orientation oppression a similar kind of oppression to that based on race and ethnicity, or different? (Bonus points: I listed these five authors in a specific order. If you have a theory about the logic of my order, explain it, or explain the order you would list them in, and ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍why.)
